All are invited to attend Solemn Sung Vespers from the Office for the Dead for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis lead by Bishop Iffert at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 25, at the Cathedral.
Bishop Iffert will also offer a special Memorial Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 26, at the Cathedral. This is one way our local church can be in solidarity with the universal Church as we commend to God the soul of our beloved Holy Father.
Confessions and Mass will be cancelled on Saturday morning (April 26).
Evening Confessions (4:00 pm) and the
Vigil Mass (5:00 pm) will continue as normal.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
Upon learning of the death Pope Francis, Easter Monday, April 21, Bishop John Iffert invites everyone to join in a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the blessing of the Pope’s life and for the happy repose of his soul.
Bishop Iffert has instructed pastors in the Diocese of Covington to toll church bells for 10 minutes beginning at 3 p.m. today, April 21, announcing the death of Pope Francis. Additionally, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington, as well as other churches, will be draped in black and/or purple bunting as a sign of mourning.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m., a pontifical stational Mass will be offered for Pope Francis at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
It is custom that the nine days following the death of a Pope are observed as official days of mourning throughout the Church. These days are called The Novemdiales. Everyone is encouraged to pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis throughout the Novemdiales.
